About Sonia

With a passion for massage therapy that has driven my career since 2009, I bring over 16 years of experience as a therapeutic remedial massage therapist.

Originally based in Wanaka, I began my journey as a contractor for Holistic Health Care, where I quickly gained local recognition for my work. This early success inspired me to establish my own independent practice, Remedial Massage by Sonia, in 2011.

During my years in Wanaka, I built a loyal clientele and treated a wide range of conditions from sports injuries and workplace strains to both acute and chronic pain. Word of mouth played a significant role in growing my reputation, and I had the privilege of providing massage support at major sporting events such as Contact Epic, the Motatapu Mountain Bike Race, and The Pioneer MTB Race. I also worked closely with elite athletes competing in multi-sport and adventure events including Challenge Wanaka, Coast to Coast, and Red Bull Defiance.

In 2021, I left Wanaka to pursue higher qualifications at SIT and briefly transitioned into working as a Healthcare Assistant. By March 2023, I relocated to Christchurch and re-established my massage practice.

My specialty is Remedial Massage, a comprehensive modality that incorporates neuromuscular therapy, deep tissue work, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, joint mobility, and both static and active stretching. I am also qualified in Dry Needling, an evidence-based pain management technique targeting trigger points.

What sets my practice apart is my collaborative, root-cause approach. I frequently work alongside chiropractors, acupuncturists, and podiatrists, and I integrate corrective exercise plans – including targeted stretching and strengthening to help restore healthy biomechanics. Relaxation techniques are woven into my treatments to support parasympathetic activation, offering clients not only relief but deep rest and restoration.

My journey has also allowed me to work within the tourism sector as a mobile massage therapist, building strong professional relationships with guests and lodge owners at prestigious destinations such as Minaret Station Alpine Lodge, Whare Kea Lodge, Tiri Tiri Lodge, Edgewater Resort, and more.
